SCG Muangthong United stormed to 4-1 victory over Suphanburi FC at the SCG Stadium, getting back into winning form and closing the gap to a top three finish to the season.
The Kirin rushed onto the scoresheet, with Daisuke Sato finding the net in the third minute, taking the pass from Heberty Fernandes and stepping around the keeper to slot home. It was a a fantastic return for the Japanese-Filipino defender after coming off an injury that saw him miss seven games.
Following Sato's strike, the Kirin were able to dominate the first half, creating several scoring opportunities that had head coach Alexandre Gama scratching his head that they didn't go in.
Eventually an opportunity paid off, with Heberty lofting in the cross for Derley, who used his height to get onto the ball and head in the second goal of the match with 10 minutes until halftime.
Suphanburi were able to penetrate into the Kirin third at times, and were the better team over the defense in terms of headers, getting onto several balls. Keeper Dang Van Lam was up to the task, able to get his hands on the attempt and shut down the attack.
The second half saw continued pressure from the Kirin, and they were almost up 3-0 when Sanukran rang a shot off the crossbar after rushing at the goal from the midfield.
Yet Suphanburi were able to close the gap, scoring on a corner kick header, which the Kirin have struggled to defend against all season.
Coach Gama followed this up with key substitutions to bring some sting back into the attack. First Patcharapol entered the game, and then Sarach Yooyen.
The tactic seemed to work as Muangthong United began to dominate in the Suphanburi end. Soon enough Derley was to get his second goal, enjoying a back-and-forth with Bruno Gallo, setting up his shot along the turf and off the far post.
In the closing minutes, the 7,500+ fans were treated to a late goal. Helped by the presence of Aung Thu who brought some additional spice to the attack, Sarach Yooyen made it 4-1, scoring from the edge of the box when the loose ball rolled his way.
SCG Muangthong United now have a short break due to the FIFA 2022 World Cup qualification games happening around the world.
The Kirin will next play Buriram United, September 14th, at the SCG Stadium.
