Muangthong United 3-0 Brisbane Roar AFC Champions League
Muangthong United will advance to the Round of 16 and have cemented their place as the team to beat in Group E of the AFC Champions League after a 3-0 victory over Brisbane Roar, played in front of a packed house at the Muangthong United home stadium.
The first goal came from Xisco, with a solid header at the 36th minute. It wasn't until the 82nd minute, however, that Chanathip Songkrasin deftly out manoeuvred two Brisbane defenders to find himself one-on-one with the keeper for the second goal. Finally, at the 88th minute Teerasil dashed to the far post to knock in the cross for the final goal of the match.
Brisbane Roar's coach John Aloisi had admitted before the match that he needed to rest key players for the club's upcoming semifinal match in the Australian League. The Roar were clearly the weaker side, and the game was dominated by the Kirin, who were able to hold possession and force turnovers in the midfield. The Kirin's keeper, Kawin Thamasatchanan, was rarely tested.
With the result the Kirin will be advance to the next round of the AFC Champions League, to play either the first or second place team from Group G, which is yet to be determined with one game remaining. Muangthong United will travel to Japan to play Kashima Antlers on May 10th, and then the Round of 16 gets underway on May 23rd.
