CUP BOUND: MTUTD to face Buriram in League Cup final

SCG Muangthong United drew 1-1 with Port F.C. and advance on aggregate to the Toyota League Cup Final. Their opponents will be Buriram United, who also advance after defeating Songhkla F.C

SCG Muangthong United began the match with intensity and focus, a clear message the Kirin were not going to rely on the one goal advantage from the away leg semifinal victory. Coach Totchtawan Sripan fielded a strong squad for the match, with only Mario Abrante missing from the starting eleven. Fans were relieved to see Chanathip back into the rotation, though Chaiyawat was given the nod as the third attacker, setting up behond Cleiton Silva, opposite Teerasil Dangda.

Within the first twenty minutes The Kirin were to have several attempts at goal, including a volley from Silva that was just a hair's thickness wide. By the thirtieth minute Kawin had few occasions to handle the ball, with the possession almost all for Muangthong, and the play in their opponents half.

Yet, as often happens in a one sided match, a sudden opening and a fast break leads to a goal, and such was the case at the 35th minute, when Wuttasai Tatong found a hole down the left side and was able to get inside the box. The only shot on net for Port FC and it was past Kawin for the opening goal.

Coach Sripan started the same 11 players in the second half. With Port FC up 1-0, the two teams were even on goals in the semifinal, and the possibility of extra time loomed for the Kirin.

Shortly after Teerasil narrowly missed the empty net from distance, the pressure from SCG Muangthong United drew a foul in the box and a penalty was awarded. Cleiton Silva, the second time in as many games, converted for the equalizing goal.

With twenty minutes remaining, Port F.C. were quick to turn up the pressure and a series of chances were to follow, but the Kirin defense were able to deny any clear chance at goal. With the pressure mounting on SCG Muangthong United, Peerapat, and later Wattana were brought into the game.

The remaining 10 minutes of the match saw SCG Muangthong United exert control once again, keeping possession with safe passes and avoiding giving up the ball.
