When SCG Muangthong United kicked off their away match against Chiang Rai on Saturday May 7, 2016, there were a few uncertainties to ponder. Would Adisak get the start after his injury last match? Would Muangthong continue their impressive list of shut out wins? Would Cleiton Silva reach 100 career goals in Thai football?
Fortunately for fans of the Kirin the answer was ‘yes’ to all three questions.
Yet in the first minute of the match Chiang Rai showed they should not be taken for granted, with a shot off the post and the Kirin defence had to scramble to clear the ball.
However the tide turned quickly for SCG Muangthong United. At the seventh minute Chanathip slid a perfect pass forward for Silva, who ran on for the shot past the keeper for his first of three goals.
Silva’s second goal was to come just a few minutes later when Chiang Rai were taught the importance of playing the whistle. A foul on Chanathip was let go by the referee in favour of the advantage, and Adisak jumped on the loose ball to find Silva on the left. Silva’s shot was over the keeper, and the score was 2-0 for the visitors.
Chiang Rai were to keep fighting and almost had goals several times in the half, including one disallowed for being narrowly offside, and another shot off the post.
A foul at the 48th minute by Mario Abrante led to a yellow card, and in the ensuing mobbing of the referee the red was also shown, and SCG Muangthong United would have to play the remainder of the match with 10 men.
Yet the Dream Team were able to hold off further attacks. Silva added his third of the match, and his 100th career league goal, when Teerasil’s cross found him alone in the centre of the pitch. Silva beat the keeper to the ball, and from distance heading it past and into the netting.
The DREAM TEAM 2016 home match campaign resumes on Wednesday May 11th, 2016, with an 8PM kick off at the SCG Stadium.
