The International Story

The Thailand U23 National Team won gold at the 28th SEA Games in Singapore, with a 3-0 win over Team Myanmar in the final match this evening. SCG Muangthong players were pivotal in the match, with Sarach Yuyen wearing the captain's arm band and providing an assist on the 2nd goal, and striker Chananan Pombuppha scoring. Chananan netted 5 goals over the course of the tournament and was tied as a leading goal scorer. Other SCG Muangthong players on the squad were midfielder Suriya Sigmuy and defender Thitipan Puangjan. The senior Thai National team (the War Elephants) will play tomorrow night in their 2nd qualification match for 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia, and Muangthong will be represented with striker Teerasil Dangda, however goal keeper Kawin is injured and unable to play. Up to 5 teams may qualify for the FIFA World Cup from the AFC (Asian Football Confederation), and currently there are 30 teams competing. Thailand won their first qualification match by beating Vietnam 1-0 in Bangkok. Their next match is June 16th at Taipei. In 2014, four teams from the AFC qualified for the World Cup: Australia, Iran, Japan, South Korea Thailand are in Group F along with Iraq, Taipei, Vietnam and Indonesia, who have now been disqualified from entering with the collapse of their national league system and governmental interference. Teams will play home-away matches against each other to determine whom advances to the third round. After the match with Taipei, The War Elephants will play again on Sept. 8th vs. Iraq. The game will be held in Bangkok. The FIFA World Cup qualification matches double as the 2019 AFC Asian Cup qualifications.
