Muangthong United bring to an end a winless streak by defeating last place Samut Songhkram 3-0 at the SCG Stadium. At the same time, Chonburi defeated Buriram 1-0, setting up a close race between the top 3 teams for the title.
In the starting line up we see that Jay Bothroyd and Erik Paartalu are still viewing from the stands due to lagging injuries. In an effort to bolster the squad Pathompon, who last year played with Nakhon Nayok, and was loaned out to Samut Songkrhram in the first leg of this season, has been given a starting role to the left of Cleiton Silva. United were slow to start and their first serious chance at net wasn't until the tenth minute with a shot bouncing off the top of the crossbar. Despite having the lion's share of the ball, there were few chances at net for most of the first half. At the 35th minute, however, a free kick from 35 yards out, taken by Mario Gjurovski, took a bounce in front of the keeper and went in for the first goal. The second half was a similar slow pace, with United once again pressing the attack most of the time. A highlight of this game came at the 70th minute when Muangthong's Spanish defender, recently signed with the club, scored his first goal for United. This highlight was quickly overshadowed however when Mario went down and had to be subbed off. Though his replacement, MIlan Bubalo, was to earn a penalty shot for United (scored by Cleiton Silva), Coach Dragan Talajic expressed his concerns that he may lose yet another key player to the squad. Despite this, Talajic called on supporters to turn out in numbers, especially to the next home match which will be against Buriram, and he felt confident United has what it takes, and promised, "We will be champions."
United's next match is an away fixture to Suphanburi this Saturday, Aug. 16th, and then at home the following Wednesday to host Buriram.
