Muangthong United defeated TOT SC 1-0 in dramatic style to hold onto their premier league top position. United had gone with a new line-up, still playing the 4-3-3 format that seems to be the preference, however Jay Bothroyd was paired with Cleiton Silva, who made his Muangthong United debut.
For most of the match the play between the two teams was equal. United pressed often, however except for a strike from 30 yards, hard from Bothroyd, there were few chances on net at either end of the pitch.
The second half saw the same line-up take the field. TOT gradually acquired four yellow cards over the course of the half, while United had two. Without a goal, the substitutions began at the 65th minute, with Milan Bubalo in for Mario Gjurovski, and about 10 minutes later team captain Datsakon Thonglao came on for Cleiton Silva. A few minutes later the best chance of the game occurred with a strike by Datsakon that was just barely over the bar.
At the 85th minute Wuttichai Tatong was subbed in. This proved to be the decisive move. United now dominated the play and TOT was under great pressure. With what seemed like seconds left, Jay Bothroyd slid to keep the ball in bounds at the touch line, directing it at the near post where Wuttichai banged the ball into the net.
The dramatic goal gave United the 1-0 victory, and another 3 points to stay clear of Buriram and Bectero Sasana.
United's next match is Wednesday July 2nd, at home vs. Buriram in the second leg of their Toyota League Cup round.
