SCG Muangthong United were unable to hold on to a 2 goal lead in 2-2 draw with 5th place Suphanburi FC.
The first half was dominated by Muangthong United, however Suphanburi were to come close on a couple of occasions, one being a header from Serginho Van Dijk (Indoensia) that Kawin was able to get his hands on. Muangthong had several good scoring chances, coming close at the 43rd minute when a cross from Teersil was headed back towards the net by Aoyama. The ball came off the post and Cleiton Silva’s shot from close in was directly at the keeper.
The condition of the field did not help either team as a pre-match thunderstorm created patches of water, slowing up the ball. A great opportunity for Datsakorn was foiled when the ball stopped suddenly in a wet spot just as he was about to fire off a shot.
The slippery pitch also led to sloppy tackles, and Suphanburi were handed two yellow cards in the first half.
Only 2 minutes in to the second half Kasidech was fouled in the box, leading to a penalty shot and the first goal, compliments of Cleiton Silva.
Shortly after Datskorn Thonglo was stretchered off the pitch grasping his right knee, with Piyaphon coming off the bench.
Suphanburi controlled the ball after this, but were vulnerable on the counter attack. At the 70th minute a ball forward to Cleiton Silva found him one-on-one with the defender from the half way line. His long shot was through the hands of the keeper, off the post, and in.
Despite the 2nd goal Muangthong were not able to contain the Suphanburi pressure, with two quick goals, both headers scored in the last 10 minutes of the match. The lack of height in the box, with the missing Kim Dong Jin, took its toll.
The failure to hold the win means Buriram have all but sealed up the championship. With only 4 games left in the season Muangthong United are 7 points behind the league leaders. Their 6-0 win over Chiang Mai at home further demonstrating the team’s dominance over the league.
