SCG Muangthong United earned a single point thanks to an extra-time goal that equalized the score at 1-1 with Bectero Sasana.
It was clear from the outset that Bectero Sasana coach Kenny Shiels had opted for a defensive stance, and relying on the counter and speed of his forwards, particularly Ghanian Gilbert Koomson who managed to tie up the MTUTD backs several times and make life difficult.
Bectero were stronger than the MTUTD defense many times throughout the match, and the goal came when Peerapat Notechaiya took the ball through the MTUD defense, right-back Suporn made the initial tackle, but not the second, allowing Peerapat in close to score.
Bectero had several opportunities to make the score 2-0, including a 1-1 situation in which Kawin made a remarkable right footed stop.
Muangthong only managed 2 shots on net, the first being a header off the post from a corner kick, and the other being the goal.
The game was physically demanding, and as Shiels said of his team after the match, "They worked so hard, gave everything." The medical staff of Bectero Sasana were on the pitch almost as much as the players, resulting in 6 minutes of injury time added at the end of the match. Injuries limited Bectero Sasana.
Coach Talajic also juggled his line-up for this match to account for injuries to make the best use of his players. It was the two subs, however, that made all the difference.
In the 95th minute Piyaphon, who had come on for Sarach Yuyen, made one of his classic long throws into the 18 yard box. The ball came to Kasidech, who then came up with the equalizer. Kasidesh had come into the match at the start of the 2nd half for Mario Gjurovski.
"We didn't deserve this match point...we have to be honest," said Coach Talajic afterwards. "I am happy that the boys fought hard to the last minute, and showed character, but at the same time we did not play well, and we dropped 2 points."
SCG Muangthong United's next match is Saturday July 25th, at the SCG Stadium against Gulf Saraburi F.C. Match tickets will go on sale tomorrow for TRULY RED members, and the days after for others.
